Farmaishi Compositions
These are special chakkardar (meaning repetition) compositions in Kathak. A chakkardhar composition is one, which repeats 3 times, set to a certain Taal. There are two parts to Farmaishi compositions (can be Tihai/Paran/Toda etc.), the Mukda part and the Tihai part. The 3 “Dhas” of the Tihai portion will fall on “Sam” at specific points in the taal cycle. Lets take an example of a Farmaishi Tihai set to Jhaptal; 10 maatras/beats cycle. This composition was learnt from Guru Mulla Afsar Khan, and I had worked on the mathematics for deeper understanding.
In this the Mukda is made of 8 maatras
The tihai is made of 9 maatras (3-3-3: Thei Ta Thei, Ta-Thei).
Hence the length of one repetition is 17 maatras (17×3 = 51; 5 avartans/cycles + Sam). Length of the chakkardhar = 51 maatras (5 avartans + Sam)
If the syllables are compiled in this structure, you can form a Farmaishe composition in Jhaptaal. Open to more discussions in the comments section.
A revision into Jhaptal to understand the 2nd image here: Jhaptal has 10 beats split into 4 vibhaags (2-3-2-3), X denotes the Sam, Number 1,2,3 denote the Thaalis, and 0 the Khaali.
